Here is some fun facts on the history of Father’s Day!
Father’s Day was first recognized in 1908, which was the same year Mother’s Day was celebrated. However, Father’s Day did not officially become a national holiday until 1972.
The first observance of Father’s Day took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5th, 1908. Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster. Mrs. Grace Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her deceased father.
The holiday was first introduced to Congress in 1913. Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Margaret Chase Smith all
fought to have Father’s Day recognized as an official holiday but Congress repeatedly resisted. It was not until 1972 when Richard Nixon made it a permanent national holiday.
Today many celebrate Father’s Day with family gatherings, special dinners, sporting events, and gift-giving. Business of Baskets can help you find the perfect gift for your father and we ship nationwide.
